Training and Education

One of the key features of quality early childhood programs, is the qualifications, training and experience level of the staff. Effective early childhood professionals have a strong background in education and development, building specialized early childhood competencies.

Smart Beginnings Greater Roanoke offers free and low cost workshops for early childhood educators throughout the year.

See our workshop schedule and topics: pdfEducator Workshops Jan-June 2012

Smart Beginnings Greater Roanoke workshops align with state early childhood standards.  Content for our workshops is based on the Foundation Blocks and Milestones of Child Development The intent of our workshops is to improve the quality of early childhood programs, because we know that children with access to high quality learning experiences are more likely to acquire the skills they need to enter kindergarten ready to succeed and adapt to new learning and social environments.

Early childhood education is critical to our community's future economic well being. It's a question of pay-now or pay-later. Research indicates that if children are prepared when they start school and reading on grade level in their early years, they're far more likely to stay on track and finish school rather than become a costly drain on the community's social service system. Those who finish school are much more likely to become contributing members of our workforce.
